Analyzing Survey Data from Data Professionals
Introduction
This project is a demonstration of how to transform, analyze, and visualize data to derive actionable insights and build an engaging dashboard using Power BI.
Project Overview
The primary focus of this project is to work with real survey data, collected from 600-700 data professionals, to understand trends in the data profession landscape. The data includes responses to various questions, ranging from job titles and programming languages used to salaries and demographic information.
Data Transformation
Data transformation is a critical step in this project, primarily conducted using Power Query within Power BI. The process began with downloading the raw data then used Power Query to clean and prepare the data, which included:
- Data Cleaning: Removing blank and irrelevant columns, renaming some columns.
- Splitting Columns: Separating job titles and programming languages into distinct columns for easier analysis. This step was essential in cleaning and extracting the “Other” responses as most had spelling errors and could hard to categorize. All other responses were identified by splitting the columns by Delimiter and categorizing them as just “Other”.
- Calculating Averages: Computing average salaries based on the given ranges.
- Demographic Adjustments: Refining demographic data to ensure accuracy in subsequent analyses.

Dashboard Design
The project also emphasizes the importance of dashboard design, focusing on creating an intuitive and visually appealing interface. Key steps included:
- Customization: Tailoring the layout and visual styles for clarity and impact.
- Organization: Arranging visual elements logically to ensure the information is easily digestible.
- Theming: Applying a custom theme for aesthetic consistency and to enhance user engagement.
